Next Book - Canterbury and Other Tales - Treading Ancient Trails

Updated: Feb 14, 2022

Stepping back from a book just completed and engaging with the next requires an effort akin to returning home after a long trip. I need to re-establish a routine. First, I tidy away piles of manuscript. Next, I enjoy a reading-for-fun break. Then I re-muster my thoughts, surround myself with research material required for the next endeavor. Last, I start writing. Having spent the past couple of months doing this, I have what Anne Lamott would proclaim to be a shitty first draft well underway.

As ideas gel, this new book gathers a life force. Six walks are destined to tramp through its pages, although one has yet to start. Ever optimistic, I’m hopeful that COVID restrictions will lift in time for Pat and me to embark on a 2000 km walk from Canterbury to Rome along the Via Francigena later this summer.

Here is a potential back-cover synopsis for Canterbury and Other Tales – Treading Ancient Trails:

Seeking solace after the death of her husband, Letson discovers a passion for long-distance walking. Accompanied by memories, curiosity and friends, this modern pilgrim with a nomadic spirit, tramps the Coast to Coast, Portuguese Camino, Pilgrims Way, Cornish Coastal Path, Ridgeway and Via Francigena. Exploring historical, social and spiritual constructs, she offers insightful connections between ancient and modern journeys, describes intriguing encounters and reveals personal demons. Sometimes exhausted, a little lost, or hungry, she and her travel mates confront mishaps with wry humour. Letson invites readers to experience an abundance of wonder: mountain passes, wind-swept beaches, desolate moors, cliff tops, sleepy villages, teaming cities, gothic cathedrals and mysterious stone circles.

As yet, no more than a suggestion, this synopsis may change as the book develops, but it’s a great place to start a new writing adventure.

The slideshow images are from the first five walks.
